Bettina Rheims is a French photographer whose Modern Lovers, consisting of 60 black & white photographs taken in London and Paris between 1989 and 1990, presents a diverse group of young people who are ambiguously androgynous. Breaking free of the conventions of fashion and portrait photography, Rheims searched for young people who are neither forcefully masculine or feminine.
The representations raise many questions to do with beauty and objectification, while the production of these larger than life-size photographs has been described by Rheims in extreme terms.
She has likened each event to 'undressing angels' and to 'pinning butterflies to a board'.
