YDV – by Paolo Chiasera

In YDV-Young Dictator’s Village the Italian artist Paulo Chiasera (1978) explores the phenomenon ‘the aesthetics of ideology’. The project- that consists of a series of paintings, a collection of gouaches and a video installation– the Bologna-based artist continues his visual research into the ‘artistic processing of history’ and notions such as power, dominance and violence, group dynamics and loss of control. In YDV – that premiered in the Moscow Museum for New History (2005)– Chiasera
focuses on the ‘design’ utilised by ‘historical and contemporary dictators’ such as Castro, Franco, Hitler, Idi Amin. Chiasera is interested in the ‘formalistic’ or ‘visual’ aspects of totalitarian systems. How are these ‘supreme rulers’ represented (in the media), which is the power of the symbols and signs they use to create their own mythology, how do they transform themselves into ‘living icons’?

Adieu – by David Maroto

In W139 the Rotterdam-based David Maroto (1976) presents a new instalment of his comprehensive project Second Circle. Second Circle can be read as complex system of heterogeneous works ( sculptures, objects, video’s, photographs, drawings) which differ from each other on a formal level but are interrelated on a thematic level while referring to notions such as desire, disillusion, games, the ‘secret’ significance of numbers and letters. In its totality Maroto perceives his incomplete oeuvre as codified ‘closed circuit’ within which new combinations/regroupings of works can be compiled, what the artist calls ‘proposals’. Every proposal, realised
in a different context, engenders a wealth of new meanings and interpretations. Previous ‘instalments’ of the project have recently been shown in the exhibition space TENT (Rotterdam) and in W139 Maroto realises a new sequel entitled Adieu. Adieu focussing on the notion of ‘parting/farewell’ and can be read as a tribute to artists and creators, such as Jean Jacques Lebel, Arthur Rimbaud and Seth Siegelaub, who ‘took leave’ of their artistic practice.
