Sebastian Weissenbacher

Hilger Contemporary, Wien

Sebastian Weissenbacher's work is characterised by an artificiality chosen on purpose. His paintings are mostly funny and ironic, but they can also irritate and stir up negative emotions. The protagonists of his work seem to stem from today's consumer society: Everyday images taken from our children's animated world as well as from our toys and food industry act as the basis for Weissenbacher's works and are being subject to alienation.

comunicato stampa

The artist was born in 1959 in Eggenburg, Lower Austria. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, with Max Weiler and Arnulf Rainer amongst his professors. Via the formative influence of these great Austrian artists and role models Weissenbacher found his own way of artistic expression rooted in Pop Art.

Sebastion Weissenbacher is setting the scene for his figures in three-dimensional surroundings and landscapes drawn in a photorealistic way.

Furthermore, we find the figures in romantic, idyllic, mysteriously dark and infinite spaces. Sometimes he also draws on photos, glossy magazines or postcards of all sorts for his ideas. Thus, he is creating a sometimes erotic, sometimes romantic aura. Occasionally, his works are embellished with ornaments, flower garlands or even baroquely shaped ribbons.

The ironic, sometimes mean titles, which can be interpreted in many ways, reveal his works as critical analyses of our everyday culture. He depicts our world full of images and the rules of conduct of our consumer society.
