Cynthia Kagan: Up Close and Tuned, Oils on Canvas - Camey McGilvray: Deconstructing The Heart, Wood and Metal Wall Sculptures

ABBOT KINNEY ART GALLERY FEATURES ARTISTS CYNTHIA KAGAN AND CAMEY MCGILVRAY AND HOSTS AN OPENING BENEFIT FOR BUDDY HACKETT SINGITA ANIMAL SANCTUARY

Abbot Kinney Art Gallery features the works of two artists - Cynthia Kagan’s distinctive animal portraiture, seascapes and symphonic oil paintings, and Camey McGilvray’s dynamic and complex new wood and metal wall sculptures. Opening September 27 through October 24, a Reception/Benefit for Buddy Hackett Singita Animal Sanctuary, will be on Saturday, October 1 from 6-9pm.

A portion of the opening night sales will be donated to this charity, a no-kill, spay/neuter and rescue/adoption organization <http://www.singita.org>. In addition, on October 16 from 4-6pm, the Gallery will host a Special Event - “High Tea and Poetry,” featuring well-known poet, Keven Bellows. Bellows will read from her recently published book, “Taking Her Own True Name.”

Kagan moved to Santa Monica from Long Island 35 years ago. Her love of color and distinctive bold style of painting is reminiscent of the Impressionists and Fauves. Her animal portraiture conveys her insightful appreciation for Man’s Best Friend and their whimsical natures. Kagan’s sensual “Symphonic Close Ups” explore the complexity and beauty of musical instruments while her “Working Shoes” series provoke an internal dialogue about individualism and personality - “the soul of the sole.” Her seascapes are a lyrical reminder that Kagan has spent a lifetime on two coasts. Her work has been shown in museums and galleries and is held in numerous private collections.

McGilvray, originally from New York, studied art at St. Lawrence University, The Art Students League, The New School in New York City and later at the University of the Americas in New Mexico. She works with wood and metal to create abstract and geometric freestanding and wall sculptures taking her designs from nature and the human form. Her work has been in galleries and museums across the country including Carnegie Art Museum and The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art. Twelve new wood and metal wall sculptures by McGilvray break hearts (the shape, that is) and put them back together again in clever and interesting ways.

Abbot Kinney Art Gallery currently represents a select group of 17 established and award winning contemporary artists from the greater LA area. The gallery’s entire collection is eclectic and exciting with works on paper and canvas in a variety of media including 3-dimensional wall art, ceramics, glass and sculpture. Other represented artists include: Susanne Belcher, Marylyn English, Karen Hansen, Sandra Cooper, Linley Eathorne, Susan Gesundheit, Sarah Willman Grote, Dafna Gilboa, Lee Goldberg, Yolanda Klappert, Mary McGill, Darlene Mellein, m. Rheuban, Rachel Ross and Avidan Ross.
