Charcoal drawings
The Andrew Mummery Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Reece Jones's
most recent charcoal drawings.
Jones has developed a technique of applying charcoal to paper that has led to the
creation of a body of works that belie the material that they are made from. It is
an alchemical process of creating light from dark dust, of destroying and
re-building, reduction and erosion - literally sanding away the surface of the
drawing, leaving a 'ghost' of what was there before. Tone and structure are built
out of charcoal, the final surface a combination of sleek, tough areas reminiscent
of vinyl, sanded striations combing the surface, and rough fragile areas where the
paper is aggressively exposed.
The implications of the technique become metaphorical and the subject matter and
themes of Jones's drawings are driven by the process of their manufacture. Dark
shadows and bursts of bright light suggest architectural spaces, imply explosions,
depict shooting-stars. Light and dark become symbolic. Illumination equates with
wisdom, revelation: darkness with ignorance, damnation. But light can also expose -
dark, hide. Humanity aspires to move from the earth to the stars, dreams of other,
brighter worlds, but from dust we came and to dust we will return.
Virtual reality computer games, Mannerist altarpieces, Baroque Church interiors,
documentary news photography, movies - the sources of Jones's images are suitable
for a contemporary polyglot, but are not the subject of the work. For that we must
look to an artists' desire to solve the technical problems involved in the process
of realising a work of art and the knowledge that such a thing is made in the face
of it's creator's, and it's audience's, mortality.
