Querelle, New paintings

Emily Tsingou gallery is delighted to present the fourth solo exhibition in London of German painter Dietmar Lutz in a second space at Regent Quarter, 36-40 York Way, King's Cross, N1 9AB

The ten recent paintings in the show weave together divergent narratives with a common starting point - that of Jean Genet's Querelle (1946). This maritime story was reinterpreted in Fassbinder's 1982 movie by the same name, and something of the sensuality of the film's distinctive aesthetic is present in Lutz's new works.

Exploring the romantic cliché of a ship coming into port and her crew venturing ashore for adventure and debauchery, these paintings depict alternative anecdotes by combining images of personal travel, real and fictional characters in a variety of settings taken from found images, photographs and memory. The references to film, photography, memory and fiction, are signature marks of the artist's oeuvre.

The exhibition coincides with the publication of Dietmar Lutz The Journey: a 100-page, full-colour volume documenting the artist's oeuvre to date, with texts by Andrew Renton, Pablo Lafuente, Catherine Wood, and Sophie Von Hellermann.
