Peculiar Encounters showcases the work of 23 artists within the unique space of an old abattoir. All of the artists have shown both nationally and internationally, the work includes Painting, Sculpture, Installation and Video. The principal thematic running through the show is the transformation and reframing of the real and the everyday, and the potential for a realisation of the fantastical and the other-worldly through such transformations.
Included among these various practises are references to science-fiction, romanticised landscape, the body and states of hybridity. The dark sense of ‘otherworldiness’ that runs through many of the works on display is enhanced by their setting in this curious, almost sinister underground space, with its series of interlocking chambers and vaults.
