Solo show

Spectrum Fine Art is proud to announce the third instalment of its sculpture series, which culminates in a long awaited solo show by internationally renowned Sculptor Peter Burke.

Featuring over 23 works – with many previously unseen - this exhibition constitutes a collection of work from the past five years and is the first opportunity in over 12 years to see a dedicated solo show of Burke’s sculpture.

Central to Burke’s work is the idea of the human presence, feeling that individuals have a predisposition to recognise and read the human form with intensity that accords no other visual activity. His current work grew out of a desire to make contact with the Western figurative tradition - to inquire into the universality of the figure using the means that reflected his environment and experience.

Burke is often associated with large scale outdoor works, especially because of his many commissions for the Cass Sculpture Foundation. Acute spatial awareness is as evident in this show as in his better known large scale commissions - with many works being created with the Great Titchfield Street space in mind; notably Yield which contains over 400 parts and will occupy the whole of the front window.

With this unique gallery show, the opportunity arises for Burke to experiment with ideas and concepts that the constraints of larger scale work do not permit, and provides the public with an enlightening insight into the practice of one of the UK’s most respected figurative sculptors.

Peter Burke was born in London in 1944. He trained as a Jig and Tool Designer at Rolls Royce, followed by studies at Bristol Polytechnic teacher training and Fine Art department. While teaching art and design he maintained his practice as an artist and for the past eleven years has given his time fully to his work as a sculptor.

The human form has long been a preoccupation and is expressed in many ways in Burke's sculpture - fragmented, whole, in groups or singly. His engineering background gave him an interest in industrial working methods and structural systems which he incorporates into his work.

He enjoys replication and mass-production and employs these processes. In his art the random meets the controlled and precision encounters chance. Drawing is important as a way of working up ideas for sculpture, envisaging relationships between his figures rather than their full form, which takes its chance in the making.

Peter Burke has exhibited since 1973 in mixed shows, his first being the Cheltenham Festival's exhibition of sculpture in the open air. His first solo show was at South Hill Park, Bracknell (1978), since when he has featured regularly at international art fairs and in British and overseas galleries. His work is in private collections in Britain, Europe and the United States, and has also been acquired by the Contemporary Art Society, London (Henry Moore Foundation purchase). He lives and works in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. One of Peter’s works from the Cass Foundation - a sculpture called Assembly - is due to be installed in Woolwich Arsenal in November/December this year.

Spectrum London has been encouraging and supporting exciting British and International contemporary artists since its beginning. From the outset, the galleries directors believed that neither artists nor art lovers needed just another gallery. What was needed was an environment that not only encouraged artists to explore and develop their natural talents, but most importantly, one that supported them in this process.

Art plays a very important role in all our day to day lives. Spectrum London’s belief in this and continued support of artists and the arts, has provided the galleries visitors with an inspiring array of work and exhibitions, including contemporary painting and drawing, photography, mixed media and site specific installations.
