Gasworks Gallery presents Lothar Gotz' site specific painting project. Gotz creates wall paintings which introduce bands and expanses of colour into interior spaces. These formal, minimal interventions are designed specifically for the spaces they occupy and aim to highlight the architectural imperfections and irregularities that would otherwise exist unnoticed. The paintings themselves are applied as if by a painter decorator, obliterating the original wall colour with flat, even coats of paint.
For this unique project, Gotz has used a site specific painting originally designed for Gasworks, to transform three very different venues. Installing the piece through spaces sacred and secular, public and private, Gotz' painting has been realised in a deconsecrated church, a dilapidated house and an occupied flat and finally at Gasworks Gallery.
As part of his exhibition at Gasworks, Gotz will also present a series of photographs documenting the painting installed in its various surrogate locations.
Lothar Gotz' recent solo exhibitions have included: Lothar Gotz, Mota Gallery, London, 1999, Last Orders, Goethe Institute, London, 2000, Simsalabim, Galerie Epikur, Wuppertal, 2000.
Lothar Gotz will give a talk about his work on Saturday 20th January at 2pm.
