Student Responses to the AIDS Epidemic
Williamstown, MA - in observance of World AIDS Day, December 1, Williams
College Museum of Art (WCMA) presents, It's Your Life: Student Responses to
the AIDS Epidemic. This week long exhibition is a collaboration between
local students at Mt. Greylock Regional High School and Williams College
students. Artwork created by both in response to the AIDS epidemic, as well
as student written responses, will be displayed in the museum in unexpected
places in hopes of surprising the viewer and fostering an awareness of the
growing epidemic. It's Your Life will be on view from November 29 through
December 4, 2005. On December 1 at 2 pm, the students will gather at WCMA to
discuss their work.
Last year, half of all new HIV infections worldwide were diagnosed in young
people between the ages of 15 and 24. People in this group are falling prey
to AIDS at a rate of 6,000 each day. Alarmed by these statistics, Aimee
Hirz, Williams College Graduate Student in the History of Art, Class of
2007, approached Ms. Jane-Ellen DeSomma, a Mt. Greylock high school teacher
of Art Theory, and Williams College students with this collaborative
project. Both groups of students had full creative authority over the type
of art they made, so long as it expressed their feelings about AIDS. High
school students involved in the project include Paul Bergmann, Alex Peacock,
Jesse MacDonald, Kelly Johnson, and Amy Mendes. Williams College students
include Darci Hanna, Yao Wu, Sarah Hack, Young Hahn, Anne Smith and Sarah
MacWright.
This installation takes place in conjunction with other related World AIDS
Day events scheduled on the Williams College campus in the months of
November and December. World AIDS Day is a day for global remembrance of
those who died from and those living with HIV or AIDS. It is also a day to
take action in order to educate people about protecting themselves from the
virus. For more information on Williams College events, please contact
