Designed to educate, excite and enthrall the anticipated 25,000 visitors with a broad spectrum of artworks, Art Miami 2006 will feature museum-quality painting and sculpture, along with a wide variety of photography, multi-media projects, works in glass to the more unusual objects that include contemporary Japanese baskets, pre-Columbian figures and textiles.
Ilana Vardy, Director of Art Miami, announces a “significantly changed" 16th annual exposition of modern and contemporary art which will take place January 6 - 9, 2006 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Hall D.
Presenting approximately 125 galleries* from 25 countries, Art Miami 2006 includes
newcomers from Aruba, Korea, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Monaco and The Netherlands.
There are 50 first-time participants, more than 13 from New York alone, who will join
their colleagues to create one of the most exciting fairs to date in South Florida.
“We’re so excited to fulfill our mission of providing art enthusiasts from South Florida
and beyond with an opportunity to encounter both emerging and established top quality
galleries from around the world," stated Vardy. “This year’s exhibitors will introduce
artwork that spans the gamut of aesthetically accessible, affordable, challenging,
familiar and those that are a good investment," continues Vardy.

The Galleries
Included among the many first-time galleries are: Sundaram Tagore Gallery, Leon

Magnan Projects, all from New York; Schoeni Art Gallery from Hong Kong and The
Americas Collection from Miami.
A collection of prestigious returning exhibitors include: Osborne Samuel LLP, London;
Jerald Melberg Gallery, Charlotte; Karpio-Facchini Gallery and Cernuda Arte, Miami;
Heller Gallery and Denise Bibro Fine Art, New York; Praxis Mexico; Praxis International,
Buenos Aires; Juan Ruiz Galeria, Maracaibo, to name but a few.
The highly anticipated Currents section will continue to focus on new trends in cutting
edge international art. Participants in this section include galleries from Aruba (Access
Art), Argentina (Alexandra Phillips Fine Art), New York (Magnan Projects, Annina Nosei
and Lyons Wier Gallery); Spain (ABA Art Contemporani and Carmen de la Guerra); and
Miami (Diaspora Vibe and Damien B.) among others.
Project Spaces throughout the show floor will once again highlight provocative solo
exhibitions. Most notably, visitors will witness works in creation by Cuban artist Agusti'n
Bejarano, presented by the nina menocal gallery, from Mexico City.
Special Projects
The annual Director’s Choice program offers a Miami artist the opportunity to exhibit
one piece or installation at the entrance to the Art Miami Fair. The selection is
determined solely by Ms. Vardy. Miami Beach-based Adriana Carvalho is the 2006
Director’s Choice artist. Brazilian-born, Ms. Carvalho will create a stunning installation
in her signature style, whereby she manipulates metal and wire and transforms other
unexpected found objects normally associated with the traditional role of women.
“Adriana’s work is interesting because the iconography deals with very feminine ideas
and concerns—women’s dresses are a dominant theme in her work—while the medium
she works in is very hard, even dangerous," states Vardy. “Manipulating metal, wire
and transforming other unexpected objects normally associated with the traditional role
of women, Adriana crafts installations that are at once symbolic, somewhat haunting
and also quite playful," continues Vardy.
Inaugurated in 2004, the first Director’s Choice artist was Sara Modiano and in 2005
Carolina Sardi was awarded the honor.
“All three Director’s Choice artists to date are coincidentally artists-in-residence at the
ArtCenter/South Florida, an important partner for us in the community," states Vardy.
Panel Discussions will take place during show hours on Saturday and Sunday (January
7 and 8) and are free and open to the public. These discussions feature important art
world experts and personalities. Topics will include New Developments in
Contemporary Photography; Contemporary Art of the Caribbean: Are you paying
attention? and Buying Contemporary Art in a Global Society: What Provokes
Collecting? The full schedule will be announced shortly.
New Initiatives
“To acknowledge appreciation of our loyal audience, Art Miami introduces Free-Day
Friday, to be followed by Art Miami’s famously bustling Opening Night Bash—all of
which will take place on Friday for the first time, and at no charge," states Ilana Vardy.
Also new for 2006 is Meet Me in Miami, a photography exhibit of 23 Miami-based
photographers**, each presenting their own highly unique perspective of Miami. This
exhibition is curated by Carol Jazzar. An artistic photography exhibit featuring artists
currently living and working in Miami, Meet Me in Miami is divided into three categories:
People, Places and Activities. The work is presented in straight photography in both
black and white and color.
“This exhibition is a contemporary journey through a city that means something different
to everyone," says Carol Jazzar. “Multi-faceted Miami is glamorous, poor, campy, and
touristy; urban yet suburban; ethnic, and chic -- a home to those who call it home,
regardless of one's origin," continues Jazzar.
Art Miami is partnering with several local restaurants to offer Art Miami Prix Fixe menus;
the price will include a VIP invitation to the fair. The menus at such top restaurants as
La Cofradia and o-R-o will be available from December 1, 2005 through January 9,
2006. Details will be released shortly.
Tickets to Art Miami are available at the box office and are $12 for one day admission;
$9 per person for groups of 10 or more people; students and senior citizen tickets are
$5 and children under age 12 are admitted free.
Free guided tours of Art Miami will be available in Spanish and English. Tours begin at
the Information Desk inside the show entrance and scheduled tour times will be posted
at the Information Desk.
