The artist's works are meditations on the grid. A delicate network of black and grey lines of varying width form the core of his paintings. The works derive their energy from the rhythm created by the dense matrix and the shades of soft yellow, blue and green that appear woven into the interstices of the painting.
New Paintings
Josh Dov opens an exhibition of new paintings at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, February 2, with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30 pm. Known for his minimalist grids, Dov expands his painterly vocabulary in these new works through an increasingly complex layering of colors.
His works are meditations on the grid. A delicate network of black and grey lines of varying width form the core of his paintings. The works derive their energy from the rhythm created by the dense matrix and the shades of soft yellow, blue and green that appear woven into the interstices of the painting. Intricate and nuanced, the dense compositions have a depth and complexity that belie the simplicity of their basic structure.
Josh Dov, born in Los Angeles, California, in 1971, received his MA from the University of New Mexico in 1997, his BA from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1993, and was the recipient of the Irwin Fellowship in Painting in 1993. His work has been exhibited in Albuquerque and Los Angeles. In 2004 he was introduced to the San Francisco audience in his show with Brian Gross Fine Art at One Post Street. The exhibition continues through March 18, 2006.
