A remarkable panorama spanning European painting from the 17th to the 19th century
Pursuing its exploration of great collections, the Fondation de l’Hermitage welcomes this time over 130 works from the Muse'e Fabre in Montpellier. Considered as one of the foremost public French collections for its wealth, the museum was founded in 1828 and has been continuously enhanced over the years thanks to numerous donations and a dynamic acquisitions policy.
Europe's major artistic movements
Offering a remarkable panorama spanning European painting from the 17th to the 19th century, the exhibition explores the major artistic movements taking the visitor right up to Impressionism. It opens with an ensemble of works by great 17th-century masters and illustrates the treasures of the French (Bourdon), Italian (Le Bernin), Spanish (Zurbara'n), Flemish (Breughel the Younger, Rubens) and Dutch (Steen, Metsu) schools. From the Regency period to the Revolution, 18th-century French art is admirably represented by Ranc’s voluptuously draped figures (Vertumne et Pomone), Houdon’s elegant marble sculptures and Greuze’s delicate portraits of children.
One of the finest ensemble of drawings in France
The 19th century is yet another highlight of the exhibition thanks to the patronage of Alfred Bruyas, an enthusiastic collector under whose guidance the museum moved into the modern era. Thus, after Delacroix’s Orientalist vision expressed with a magical combination of colour and light, Courbet’s masterpiece the Bord de mer a' Palavas vigourously marks the emergence of a new, independent way of painting. A fresh sensitivity in close communion with nature was to become a characteristic feature of landscape from the Barbizon school (Corot, Rousseau) to Impressionism (Bazille, Degas). The presentation’s finishing touch is an extensive ensemble of drawings (La Hyre, Fragonard, Boucher, Ge'ricault) from the Muse'e Fabre’s collection, one of the finest in France.
