Salander-O'Reilly Galleries presents an exhibition of new sculpture by Michael Steiner. In his eighth exhibition at Salander-O’Reilly, Steiner continues the series of “cage" sculptures that he began in 2002. The exhibition includes recent smaller scale bronze sculptures, large wood sculptures and related paintings on paper. This exhibition will be the first contemporary exhibition in Salander-O’Reilly’s new galleries at 22 east 71 Street, and Steiner’s work will be displayed in a setting surrounded by Old Master Art.

In these “cages," Steiner continues to develop his interest in aggressive patterning and contrast. Grids, holes, lattice and curves are the pictorial elements. In the evolution from the more intimately scaled bronze sculptures to his recent large-scale wood pieces Steiner achieves a new quality of lightness and refinement. Steiner has described his use of pattern as “hard-nosed decoration," adding, “but I’m still making sculptures. I’m using decorative components to make sculptural shapes. I’m interested in how they activate the space around them." Steiner overlays pattern on top of pattern in interlocking effects of flatness and transparency. The critic Karen Wilkin notes that Steiner’s sculptures seem “energized by the conflict between simplified almost schematic forms and improvisational, witty drawing."

Starting with his first solo exhibition at the age of 18, at Fischbach Gallery in New York, Michael Steiner has been making original, thought-provoking sculpture for over thirty years. His work is included in numerous private and museum collections, including: the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
