A new video work "Its not you, its me" features the artist as a series of wildly different characters, in front of different solid color schemes while reciting imperceptible phrases that refer to a particular of state of mind.
Blood On Your Saddle
40000 is pleased to present a solo exhibition from Chicago-based artist David Coyle.
David Coyle’s paintings are simultaneously developed in two modes: figuration and abstraction. The subject matter of the singular paintings appear to be disparate, yet they share a common language in approach to scale, materials and the mining of popular culture. These medium to large-scale paintings do not so much create a narrative but, instead, ostensibly create a common ground from where to approach their meanings. This leveled playing field becomes a foraging ground in which pop-culture, from the time it is deemed pop through the time is was deemed historical, is examined. Whether these meanings are manifested through turn of the century horror literature or more recent sci-fi movies, they are both connected to a sense of time and the viewer’s mnemonic memories of their own experience.
For "Blood On Your Saddle", David Coyle will be premiering a new video work in the gallery’s project room. "Its not you, its me" features the artist as a series of wildly different characters, in front of different solid color schemes while reciting imperceptible phrases that refer to a particular of state of mind.
This is a veritable potpourri - or visual instruction manual -on the time-honored art of ending relationships that is flush with a sad humor that waxes philosophically on the mortality of life with a significant other.
