Earthbound
Robert Sandelson is delighted to present an exhibition of new works by the British artist Andrew Campbell (born 1969). The show will include paintings, installations, text based work and film. His previous exhibition entitled Constellation took as its subject matter the sky and its stars - things out of reach and unfathomable. In Earthbound Campbell has shifted his focus horizontally, if you like, to the landscape and objects around him.
Among the works in the exhibition will be Outpost, a still of which is illustrated above. The film features a caravan that intermittently plays a sequential cycle of bugle calls from ‘Reveille’ to the ‘Last Post’. The cyclonic nature of the bugle calls acts as a constant reminder of the passage of time. The works make reference to the passing of time and the marking of existence. There is a sense of repetition and rhythm, be it the beating of the heart, the bubbling of water or the turning of a page. This subject matter has pushed the work into the new medium of film and video with the images being projected or transferred onto cement rendered, canvas-like frames, resulting in the imagery sinking into the surface and taking on a painterly quality.
Campbell captures personal, often fleeting moments, which nonetheless have a universal dimension. His works present subtle intervention in his surroundings conveying his concern for the environmental future of this planet. They celebrate frozen moments that depict isolated but significant objects within the landscape and the rediscovery of forgotten things. The polished bronze balloon, Aide Memoir, directly relates to his performance piece ‘Drop’ where he drops a gold balloon in the North Sea. It acts as a tribute and memory for the artist, in the same way as the paintings are like reminders in ‘painting like’ form of the films.
Campbell involves the viewer and invites their opinion. His large circular canvases contain holes that puncture the imagery and create a moment of hesitation or a pause. The viewer is invited to fill the space or imagine what is missing. This is also true of his text works that are engraved on glass in large 4-foot square shallow boxes. The engraved words are often related to the titles of a film, but are open to the viewer’s own thoughts and interpretation - just as the shadows cast on the back of the frame acting as an echo of the main statement itself transparent and light.
Andrew Campbell’s exhibitions include, the RSA in Edinburgh, the London Art Fair in Islington for many years, and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge. He currently works as a lecturer at the Norwich School of Art and Design. He lives and works in Norfolk.
