Munich Technical University’s museum of architecture at the Pinakothek der Moderne is holding the first comprehensive exhibition of the work of sauerbruch hutton architects. The architectural studio is responsible for the construction - currently in progress - of the museum that is to house the Brandhorst Collection (the foundation stone was laid in October 2005). They also won the 2004 contest to build the new ADAC headquarters.

Sauerbruch hutton architects was founded in 1989 by Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch and soon gained international acclaim through a series of distinctive buildings they designed for administrative, industrial and residential purposes. The spatial qualities, skilful application of materials and resolute use of colour have made their buildings unmistakable in character. Along with the GSW complex in Berlin, which was completed in 1999, their Experimentelle Fabrik (Experimental Factory) in Magdeburg (2001) and the Federal Office of the Environment in Dessau (2005) have received widespread recognition at home and abroad.

The title of the exhibition >>1 2 3 4 - the architecture of sauerbruch hutton<< refers to four themes: form, content, surface and materials. They are intended to provide an illustration of the particular characteristics of the architecture of sauerbruch hutton. Each theme makes use of a different medium to simulate the reality of a building.

The first part of the exhibition presents twenty buildings - some realised, others projected - on the basis of impressive models and axonometric drawings.

Following on from this is a video installation by the young female director Uta Adamczewski. On three synchronically running projections Matthias Sauerbruch, Louisa Hutton and the users of their buildings discuss the architecture of the studio. This juxtaposition of the different perspectives produces a multi-facetted picture of the work of sauerbruch hutton.

Next, the photographs of the Finnish artist Ola Kolehmainen show the buildings of sauerbruch hutton architects from the perspective of the photo-artist. These large-format works capture the interplay of the visual and haptic qualities of the surfaces - a central feature of the architects’ work.

The presentation culminates in a comprehensive display of the plans for the new building that is to house the Brandhorst Collection. In the form of a studio and office situation the planning process is demonstrated with the aid of drawings, models, samples of colours and materials and also an original-size study of a partial building front. The aim is to explain to the visitor in a number of different ways the complex process of decision-making and design that goes into every building.

Accompanying the exhibition is the publication >>sauerbruch hutton archive<< edited by Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton, published by Verlag Lars Muller Publishers, Baden, Schweiz (with 342 pages and approx. 1000 primarily colour illustrations) in German/ English. Price 38 Euro.

On 22.09.06 at 6 p.m. Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch will be giving a talk in the Ernst vom Siemens-Auditorium in the Pinakothek der Moderne on the subject of the post-industrial city, ecology and colour. Although at first glance the three concepts appear to have little in common, the work of sauerbruch hutton shows how they can be united in a strikingly singular fashion. Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch will present their most recent buildings and projects and report on the position of their studio in the context of architectural practice today.
