A la couleur. No matter if he uses canvas, paper or water colour they all have a sputtering principle of composition in common: one time like a pattern of apparently erratically scattered elements, then again shielding the whole surface.
A la couleur
Jan Voss, who was born in Hamburg in 1936, lives in Paris, where he ranks
among the best-known artists of modernity. In 1968 he took part in the
Dokumenta IV in Kassel. The Muse'e d'Art Modern de Ville de Paris showed his
first major retrospective already in 1978.
Voss loves playing with colours, forms and materials. No matter if he uses
canvas, paper or water colour they all have an excessively sputtering
principle of composition in common: one time like a pattern of apparently
erratically scattered elements, then again shielding the whole surface, once
loosely distributed over the area, another time extremely concentrated.
The gallery will show drawings from the last years, which sometimes remind
us of musical notations! Maybe it is exactly this musicality in his works,
which made the Salzburg Festival decide to monopolise the whole graphical
presentation of the festival this year, the Mozart-year, with Jan Voss¹s
motives.
Opening: Saturday, July 1, 2006, 11 a.m.
