Works by the winners of the Spiridon Neven DuMont Prize
On the occasion of this year’s award of the Spiridon Neven DuMont Prize to a graduate from the Cologne Kunsthochschule fur Medien (art academy for media studies), the museum will present works by the new prize winner and the ten previous winners on all floors of the building.
The concept of this exhibition is to establish a dialogue between “traditional" painting and “modern" media art. Most of the artists presented have developed new projects for this show, which take up and play on the psychological effect of the museum and its collection on the observer.
Heike Mutter, who was awarded the prize in 1999, was inspired by the works of mediaeval painters, while Ursula Damm (1998) and Klaus Fritze (2000) will display their works in the gallery of 19th century art. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is consciously taking this step of embracing modern art in order to make visitors aware of the modernity inherent in traditional art.
