Circles and Cycles
Angela Conner lives and works in London. She has made sculptures for HRH The
Prince of Wales, President Chirac, The Duke of Devonshire, Camilla Parker
Bowles, among others, and her work can be seen in collections and estates,
piazzas, and parks around the world. She has created large-scale pieces for The
Economist Plaza in London, Aston University in Birmingham, Chatsworth House and
elsewhere she has just erected Irish Wave in Dublin - which is believed to be
the tallest sculpture in Europe – which will be unveiled by the Irish Prime
Minister later this year.
Angela Conner is essentially a landscape sculptor. The pieces are abstract and
made from a variety of materials including bronze, stone, slate and marble,
steel, resin, Perspex and Plexiglas. Many of the sculptures are large in scale
and sited outside - often in public spaces. Vital to the work - and in varying
degrees - are the natural elements of water, wind, sunlight - shadow - and
gravity that move or give a moving component to the sculptures. She takes
pleasure in exploiting the dichotomy that exists between the often huge and
heavy structures, delicate balance and the lightness of touch needed to upset
their equilibrium. For the most part the pieces are in perpetual motion. Making
larger-than-life sculptures requires a profound understanding both of the
materials used and the mechanics of stress and balance. The veracity in Conner’s
work stems from curiosity, from invention and ingenuity, from lateral thinking,
and a great deal of confidence.
