Martino Gamper + Designing Modern Britain + Luis Eslava + FredriksonStallard

comunicato stampa

Martino Gamper 02 December 2006 – 04 March

'There is no perfect chair' declares the designer Martino Gamper, who has been making a chair a day in a bid to make 100 chairs in 100 days. Using a stock pile of discarded and donated chairs Gamper creates his new chairs from elements of existing ones. By deconstructing the chair he gains a new insight into its construction and use of materials which informs the creation of the new design. The process is immediate, spontaneous like sketching in three dimensions. These chairs will be displayed in the Design Museum alongside some selected by Gamper from the Design Museum collection.

Designing Modern Britain 30 July 2006 – 04 March

The Design Museum is telling the story of Designing Modern Britain by illustrating the impact of design on our lives. Design is a field in which Britain excels, and many of the world’s most influential designers work here. Featuring Harry Beck's 1931 diagrammatic map of the London Underground, and the first Mini and Morris-Minor to come off the production line, this exhibition explores how design has modernised Britain in the last century and shaped our lives today. From the modernist pioneers of the 1930s, to the ambitious plans for the London 2012 Olympics, this exhibition explores design’s impact on British daily life.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Luis Eslava 12 January – 01 March

At a time when both designers and consumers are overwhelmed by complicated manufacturing techniques and advanced material technologies, Luis Eslava champions the straightforward in Face to Face, an installation for the Design Museum Atrium, made from humble Velcro. Since its invention in the early 1940s Velcro has been used for a variety of purposes but is usually hidden from view. Through Face to Face Eslava brings the material's unique flexibility, transparency and tactility to the fore through beautifully sculptural objects - infinitely reconfigurable light shades and wall applications that spread across any surface like 3D drawings.

FredriksonStallard 23 January – 01 March

From dark and brooding to boisterous and brazen, the designs of Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard explore notions of opulence and sensual darkness to create furniture and products that are rich and conceptually challenging.
Part of a new breed of avant-garde designers for whom narrative is paramount, the London-based designers have been collaborating since 1995 and launched their design partnership in 2005. Both graduates of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, FredriksonStallard have earned international renown for their idiosyncratic style and alchemist’s approach to materials.
