People of the 20th Century
People of the 20th Century
An exhibition in collaboration with Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne
Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam presents a representative selection of vintage prints from German photographer August Sander’s world-famous ‘People of the 20th Century’ project. August Sander (1876-1964) proposed to chart the entire structure of society of his day. The result was a sociological project, a historical document and a photographic masterpiece. Sander arranged this highly ambitious project into seven principal categories: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, The Woman, Classes and Professions, The Artists, The City and The Last People.
August Sander’s portrait photography had an enormous impact on the work of subsequent generations of photographers. The tension in his work between the individual and the archetype played an especially important role in the development of portrait photography. Foam selected about 150 vintage prints from ‘People of the 20th Century’ providing a representative reflection of August Sander’s perspective and the categories he established.
