The Great Preparation

The artist, by means of his works, makes up an allegory where cooking and plastic arts are paralleled. At the outset of the search that has led to the present body of works, the cook represented a key figure as a leitmotiv in a series of variations with a view to reveal transformations and bold upsets in time.

As regards the painting language, the works deal with the relation between space and figure, the shaping of a pulsatile space which covers and uncovers the figure that stands still. In addition, a sequence of overturns appears in the compositions: an uncanny amalgam of images springing from transfigurations of various elements.

The isolation of limbs, their extension in space, their incorporation into inert matter recall the unfailing material part of human beings. On the other hand, the parallel, between the cook who transforms the raw into the cooked and the painter who recasts his material into elaborate form, refers to the process of sublimation, the conversion of need into pleasure.

The accession of the cook figure to a hierarchically structured collectivity creates an ambience of readiness. On this occasion, the cooks are not presented in a moment of collective activity, but refer to a military formation. Furthermore, in other works, an image of chaos and disorder is revealed, as a counterpoint. Thus, the circle of parallel between cooking and Art is closed: hierarchy and discipline in the milieus of art and gastronomy and, simultaneously, chaos and creative disorder.
