E31 Gallery is proud to present ''Jack Early,'' an exhibition of new works. In his return to making artwork, Jack Early presents a video projection and six mixed-media sculptures which incorporate sound, text, paint and readymade materials. The show will be on display from October 3rd until November 15, 2008.

“Jack Early” is the exhibition as Bildungsroman. It tells the story of the possibility of its own making. The subject of Early’s large- scale poster, Untitled, 2008, is a story with mythic status among art students: in the early 1990s as part of the art duo Pruitt-Early, Early experienced the dissolution of his art career and the loss of his love after receiving a series of disastrous reviews. Early, from his Artworks for Teenage Boys to the present, has had a knack for deploying pop references to evoke hidden desires and fears. His autobiographical poster uses the font and colors of the prologue to Star Wars, a visual act at once epic, efficient and humorous.

Early has since lived in New York and gradually returned to making art and started to write music. This exhibition centers on songs written by Early and performed by Early and his peers including the former Luna musicians Dean & Britta. In an installation that prioritizes the possibility of intimacy, interactivity and storytelling in an exhibition space, the songs are presented sculpturally as a series of six colorful vinyl LPs on multicolor turntables a viewer can play in the gallery. The clean lines and yellow, green and pink of the records and their pedestals are as cheery as a child's bedroom. Early’s musical references include Burt Bacharach, the Bee Gees, Dionne Warwick and Karen Carpenter, and his visual style deploys the television-friendly, tertiary-color saturated pop-rock group stage sets of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A two and a half minute video shows the artist dancing, celebratory, in silhouette.

Jack Early was born in 1962 in Raleigh, N. C. He has shown previously with Leo Castelli Gallery and 303 Gallery in New York, Stuart and Regan in Los Angeles, and Il Capricorno, Venice. His work has been included in several major anthologies of the art of the twentieth century and received extensive critical attention from major publications including Artforum, Art in America, andThe New York Times. He lives and works in New York. (Maika Altenburg, Brooklyn, NY)
