Douglas Gordon

The British School at Rome, Roma

Pretty much every film and video work from about 1992 until now.

Douglas Gordon (Glasgow, Scozia, 1966) vive e lavora a New York.

Pretty much every film and video work from about 1992 until now. To be seen on monitors, some with headphones, others run silently, and all simultaneously (1992-2007) is a complete retrospective (in just one room) of Douglas Gordon’s cinematic work. It presents to the Italian public an installation originally conceived for the Galeria Foksal, Warsaw, Poland, and then presented at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2002, at Fundació Miró in Barcellona in 2006 and, recently, at the MART in Rovereto. It consists, as the title states, of a reprise of all his video and film works as a reminder of the breadth and richness of Gordon's inquisitive art: here is the fly, superglued upside down to a tabletop; the found footage pieces, including the shell-shocked war victim; the female hysteric etc, the appropriated and altered mainstream Hollywood movies as 24 Hour Psycho or Through a Looking Glass, reworking famous De Niro’s monologue in Taxi Driver.
The work changes each time in terms of how it is installed, and each time Douglas Gordon makes a new video, he adds to the work. Also the monitors, some of them accompanied with headphones, are installed in different ways at every exhibition.
At the British School at Rome 50 monitors are installed and at least as many videos shown. Every monitor is placed on a piece of furniture, on a box or beer crate, or on shelves, surrounding the viewer. All the crucial themes in the artist’s work are present in the installation: recognition and repetition, time and memory, authorship and authenticity, darkness and light, in a kind of darkly atmospheric narrative, constantly circling his own obsessions.

Douglas Gordon ( Glasgow, Scotland, 1966). He lives and works in New York. Since his first solo show in 1986, he has exhibited extensively, including the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands; the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the DIA Center for the Arts in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. In 2006, his work was the subject of exhibitions appearing at the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland; and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Trento, Italy. Gordon was the 1996 recipient of Britain's Turner Prize, in 1997 was awarded Premio 2000 at the Venice Biennial, and in 1998 he was presented with the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum in SoHo. He was also included in the SkulpturProjekte in Münster in 1997. Most recently Gordon worked in collaboration with Philippe Parreno to produce a film about world-renowned French football player Zinedine Zidane. This film has been recently purchased by Gugghenheim Museum.
