Real Landscapes
Landscape as far as the eye can see! Majestic rock formations or deserts with
endless horizons are to be seen in Thomas Wrede’s photographic work. Desolate
houses, settlements, building lots or trailers in the middle of the vastness
confounds the observer. They look so small and vulnerable in these large-scale
landscapes. Only at the second look is the artificial staging in the pictures
revealed. Small models were placed in real landscapes.
The artist Thomas Wrede lets the observer be confronted with constructed reality in
the series “Real Landscape”. Skilfully he balances on the edge of reality and image.
Lacking units of measurement, the perception alternates between micro and macro
levels. Sometimes one is captured by the poetry and beauty of the landscape:
outlined by the lighting nature can be admired. The next moment one comprehends the
artificially staged drama in the size of toys.
Wrede displays our longing for nature by staging ideal scenery. Thereby he abandons
the photograph as a pure means of documentation. In Real Landscapes he finally turns
the relation between reality and image, artificiality and naturalness upside down.
“One dives into these wondrous picture worlds, which bring together longings and
anxieties in an astonishingly peaceful manner in the media of photography. That is
what constitutes his personal style. The imagination turns into hallucination.” (Dr.
Sabine M. Schmidt, Artist Kunstmagazin 2/2007)
