The 1st World Ceramic Biennale Competition and Exhibition, which is held in Kyonggi province, Korea, is highly regarded as a comprehensive and influential competition that attracted entries from all over the world. The event is expected to become a new firmly established foundation which the global ceramics community could further build upon.
The other award winners were as follows: Gold Prize went to Lee,
Yong-phil(Korea) in the category of Ceramics for Use, and Ken Eastman(U.K.) in
Ceramics as Expression category. The Silver Prize winners were Kim, Sang-
ki(Korea) and Masatoshi Sakaegi(Japan) in the Ceramics for Use, and Philippe
Barde (Switzerland) and Torbjoern Kvasboe (Norway) in the Ceramics as
Expression. Bronze Prize went to Karin Bablok (Germany), Francois Ruegg
(Switzerland), Hwang, Kap-soon and Sohn, Ho-gyu (Korea) in the Ceramics for Use
category, and Kim, Hyun-sook (Korea), Masamichi Yoshikawa, Jun Nishida (Japan),
and Yuh, Sun-koo(U.S.) in the Expression category. Special Prize were given to
eight entrants each in the for Use and as Expression category. Jurors Prize were
given to five entrants, and 257 work were selected for special commendation.
These award-winning works, selected through two screenings from 4,206 pieces
submitted by 2,019 artists from 69 countries, will be displayed during the World
Ceramic EXPO (August 10 - October 28) at the World Ceramic Centre, Ichon.
The Grand Prize winning work by Lawson Oyekan is a huge piece made of red clay
(w. 68cm d.68cm h.210cm, 110kg). Oyekan has held many exhibitions in the U.S.
and other countries. His works are on permanent display at renowned art
galleries and museums in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Japan.
As European and American artists have mostly won all major awards at past
international competitions and exhibitions, the fact that an African artist won
the Grand Prix at the first international ceramic competition and exhibition in
Korea has caused a sensation in the global art community.
