The gallery is pleased to present new works by the British artist Tobias Collier. It is his first solo exhibition in Denmark.
Tobias Collier (born 1972) graduated with an MA in "fine arts" at Sct.
Martins School of Art in 1999. His first solo exhibition was at the VTO
Gallery in 1999, and since then the artist has exhibited at Steven
Friedman Gallery and at Lisson Gallery in London. Tobias Collier had his
first show in Denmark earlier this year. In January 2001 his video piece
Coffee Cosmology was shown at Galleri Tommy Lund.
The new works he will present at the exhibition involve various media.
Painting, video, and drawing (on paper as well as on the wall). Like the
previously shown Coffee Cosmology the works in different ways deal with
man's striving towards an understanding of the universe.
This subject is explicitly expressed through the detailed and formally
composed works. The banality of the simple drawings contrasts the
abstract conception of the Universe, which they are trying to portray.
This doubleness can be found in all the works. For example in the video
"Toast/Tranquility", where the similarity between the surface of cheese
on toast and the surface of the moon is emphasized by a sound track,
reproducing astronauts' voices in space.
Commonplace events are compared with big existential questions. In the
painting "Big Bang" the ambiguity between micro and macro cosmos is
continued, as the painting is actually a representation of the pixels on
a normal television screen.
