Sam Lee Gallery, Los Angeles

On show new oil paintings on canvas. As the title of the exhibition suggests, "...and out of the corner of my eye... " Gambill's approach is to depicting the intangible and the peripheral, that which is not seen or addressed head on such as a fading memory or something seen in a reflection in a window.

...and out of the corner of my eye...

Sam Lee Gallery is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition ". . . and out of the corner of my eye . . . " by Los Angeles-based artist Jeff Gambill. This exhibition runs from May 22 to June 30, 2007, with a reception for the artist on Saturday, June 2, from 7 – 9 p.m. Gambill’s solo show is comprised of more than 15 new oil paintings on canvas.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, " . . . and out of the corner of my eye . . . " is Gambill’s approach to depicting the intangible and the peripheral, that which is not seen or addressed head on such as a fading memory or something seen in a reflection in a window. The artist’s latest group of paintings deals with the indefinite territory between abstraction and representation—a place he finds most fertile and natural. While Gambill’s work has always sprung from personal experience (memories of places, people or moments), his recent paintings tend to keep the personal at a distance and foreground abstract elements that evolve through the art-making process in the artist’s studio.

Gambill’s works are also about the physicality of painting—he challenges himself to work with varying painterly methods such as pouring, drawing, glazing, finger-painting, printing, illusionistic modeling, etc., within this body of work. Taken as a whole, the works in the show defy reductive categorization by style or technique; Gambill turns conventional art-making practice on its head by eschewing categories altogether. His paintings stand apart from one another (as if they were created by different artists), yet they contain solid relationships and characteristics that are consistent with the artist’s visual vocabulary expressed throughout his career.

Gambill was born in Oakland, California, and currently works and lives in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from UCLA in 1980. His work is in the collections of the Orange County Art Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California, and Carnegie Art Museum (Oxnard, CA).
