The Young Art Fair
A project in the workshop community Warteck pp
Important young galleries, exciting highlights and newly designed rooms.
Following last year’s construction of our fabulous new annex with its expanded capacity of 10 spaces, the LISTE 07 – The Young Art Fair is now involved in a new conception of the fair architecture for its premises. Once again, approximately one-third of the galleries will be enjoying their Basel debut, and several important former participants will be returning for another appearance at the fair.
While the LISTE 07 – The Young Art Fair in Basel has now long been established as one of the most important discoverer fairs, in its 12th year it has no intention of resting on its laurels. Rather, it will once again present among its galleries one-third which are new to the fair and have artists who are, for the most part, making their Basel debut. One of the LISTE’s focal points consists in this balance between the presentation of the new alongside galleries that have been active in the art market for four to five years and show important young artists.
Once again the fair has decided to present several former LISTE participants who exhibited at Statements at Art Basel last year, given that they show a young and accordingly interesting program. As a rule, the LISTE accepts only galleries that are no older than five years and whose artists are under 40, with participation limited to three times. However, the 2006 expansion allows the LISTE to show such galleries again, fully confident that their presence represents a significant enrichment of the art week in Basel.
Of the 62 galleries from 21 countries participating in this year’s LISTE, 17 are making their debut in Basel. Eastern Europe will be an important focus, with one gallery from Romania, a country which has never been represented at the LISTE before, and one from the Czech Republic – a country which has not participated in the LISTE in some time. Further, two of the three Japanese exhibitors are new to the LISTE. The USA, with twelve galleries, will have a prominent presence; eight of the exhibiting galleries hail from the art metropolis New York. Among the galleries returning to the LISTE are Johann König and Jan Winkelmann, both from Berlin; Frehrking Wiesehöfer, Cologne; Doggerfisher, Edinburgh; Hotel, London; John Connelly and Team, both from New York; Peres Project, Los Angeles, as well as others.
One of the LISTE 07’s striking features will certainly be the redesigning of the large rooms by the Zurich architects UNDEND, which created the fair’s tent-like annex last year. The new design, with higher walls, a storage area for each gallery and, to some extent, a new lighting system, will enable the galleries to enjoy enhanced presentations.
This year’s special guests are the Kunstmuseum Thun, the Kaskadenkondensator, Basel, and plug-in, Basel. For the fourth time, the Nationale Swiss Insurance Company is awarding its art prize
to a Swiss art college graduate majoring in the field of “visual arts and media art”. In addition, performances by international artists from Germany, Poland, Japan, Cyprus, England, and Switzerland will take place during the opening reception as well as daily at 6:00 p.m.
With our double-faceted renovation - on one hand, focusing on content by re-admitting important former participants with young artists and, on the other hand, aligning the infrastructure with the needs of both the galleries and the visitors, - the LISTE remains up-to-date. With its powers of innovation, allowing new young galleries to gain a foothold in the art market each year, the LISTE guarantees its visitors dramatic and exciting art experiences and remains one of the most important fairs for tomorrow’s artists waiting to be discovered.
