The exhibition presents a selection of keypieces in the Joule Archive. Most notably it
contains leaves from the 'X-Album', a family
photograph album used by the artist as a site for
exploratory studies using collage and painting.
The imagery of the 'X-Album' contributes to a
wider critical understanding of the themes that
Francis Bacon developed in his major paintings.
The exhibition also contains a substantial
selection of 'Working Documents' of reworked
media images, that again, in their treatment and
subject matter, provide the sources for
expanded interpretations of the artist's work.
A substantial full-colour catalogue accompanies
the exhibition with text and commentaries by Dr
David A Mellor providing an in-depth analysis of
the material.
