Contemporary chinese photography
Six Chinese acknowledged artists representative of the new generations make up The Invention of the Present, photography exhibition with which Casa Asia opens its delegation at the Palacio Miraflores of Madrid. It consists of a display made up of around fifty works that reveal the large material and social changes of contemporary China that take place from the decade of the 90’s, as a result of the expansion of the ideology of consumption and mass culture. These photographs, which illustrate the experimental and transgressor character of the new Chinese photographic production of the last decade, are small, medium and large-format pictures and they belong to the funds of the TOUS Collection. This exhibition includes the sponsorship of the Sociedad Estatal para Exposiciones Internacionales (SEEI).
This opening exhibition of contemporary Chinese photography, which will also be the presentation of Casa Asia in Madrid, will be held next Wednesday, 20th of June at 7.30pm at the Palacio Miraflores. The display will be opened to the general public on the 21st of June and it can be visited until the 30th of September 2007. Casa Asia and SEEI have organised a gala-concertas the climax of this presentation, at 10pm at La Casa Encendida performed by the duet FM3, made up of Christian Virant and Zhang Jian, pioneers of electronic Chinese music and authors of “The Buddha Machine”.
The key word of the current situation of Chinese cities and of people that inhabit them is transformation. Transformation that is directly translated to contemporary art in terms of experimentation, transgression and new ideas introduced by a generation of artists, whose critical identity before the world of contradictions, modernization and tradition, makes them interpret it from the parody of its most media symbols. The vision of Chinese contemporary artists and photographers appears from these changes that involve mentalities and customs. This is the case of the six representative artists of Chinese contemporary photography – LIU ZHENG, YAN HUANG, AN HONG, WANG QINGSON, YANG FUDONG AND ZHANG HUAN – who give shape to “The invention of the present” or, as its subtitle says, Representations of everyday life in contemporary photography in China.
