The artists of the exhibition turn society's ideals of beauty inside out and challenge the boundaries between the genders. They deliver stories from the personal universe of the home and explore the new communities emerging in today's youth cultures. In humorous pictures they depict the moments when the individual strays from the narrow path of normalcy and fails to meet the cultural ideals. Group exhibition
Young people are united in an ecstasy buzz in an artificial paradise. A butch lorry driver dons a blonde wig to perform a soulful love song. Two human heads turn into a scrapheap from the surplus stock of consumer society. ARKEN’s summer exhibition Images of man today spotlights the conditions of the individual in a society where identity has turned into a lifestyle project.
The individual takes centre stage as never before. From politics’ cult of personality to TV entertainment where ordinary people pop up as the stars of tomorrow. The trend is also prevalent in contemporary art which offers wry looks at today’s search for identity: What decides who we are?
