The Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts invited
several artists to create new work for this exhibition. This first
invitation was accompanied by a second, to also make use of the ICT and
Editing facilities at the Institute. The background idea was that by
supporting these artists in the technical production and practical
execution of their work, the Institute could gain exposure for its
production, research and development departments. The artists did
receive assistance in realising their work, in the form of multi-media
equipment and technical know-how. They were selected on the basis of
originality and diversity of approaches. In the future, as a part of its
exhibition policy the Netherlands Media Art Institute will bestow
attention on other departments, such as conservation and distribution.
Rhythm, language and the relation between image and sound are recurrent
elements in the work of eddie d (1963). In his computer-controlled
installations he investigates sounds, movements and gestures in aspects
of everyday life. These works often imply the participation of the
viewer, directly or indirectly. eddie d is showing three new works:
Photos on Natural Rubber (2001), Orquesta Revoltillo (2001) and Still
Life installations (2001).
For his newest work, The Gift of Reading (2001), the artist Carlos
Amorales (1970), resident in The Netherlands, investigates and records
the successes (and failures) of communication transfer, and poses
questions for himself regarding forms of education, cultural interaction
and semiotics. He himself is present in the background as a character.
The work of Rob Johannesma (1970) zooms in on landscape and nature.
Previous landscapes that we know from Johannesma involved us gradually
in the image; slow movements and a horizon within the image accomplished
this. His latest work, Untitled (2001), is faster and more immediate
than we are accustomed to from him, a surprising journey of discovery
through and over the structures of moss, branches, shrubs, leaves and
details of nature. Johannesma here attempts to penetrate deeply into the
essence of nature, while at the same time maintaining a restraint that
guarantees contemplation.
Through playing with the interaction between natural and virtual motion,
the installation/performance Tremo (2001) by Simply B (consisting of
Monica Blok, Diana Blok, René Blom, Floris Brasser and Willem Hein
Trienstra) seeks the essence of movement. How can one balance at the
point where one movement stops and the next begins? During the
exhibition, on October 12, 13, 14 and 20, Simply B. will be presenting
performances.
Exhibition 13 October - 17 November
opening 12 November 17.00 - 19.00 hour
