Imaginary constructs of home. Five artists, four from the Berlin-based collective adapter and one from Canada, three scientists from the research institute nexus, and a theatre director converge to exchange thoughts and ideas regarding this mysterious folk.
Imaginary constructs of home
“The legend of their history, which they carefully preserve, is this: a great many years ago, this river shore was settled by a society of adventurers, men and women who came from afar. Making themselves friendly with their new neighbors, these folk resisted the structures of government and religion. Uprooting all conventional forms of society, they lived in a delightful utopia of their own creation . . .”
Join a group of nine creative thinkers as they come to terms with the recent discoveries in the Landwehrkanal. Five artists, four from the Berlin-based collective adapter and one from Canada, three scientists from the research institute nexus, and a theatre director converge to exchange thoughts and ideas regarding this mysterious folk. Where did they come from? Why? Where did they go? Or did they? As this team struggles for understanding of and connection with this lost group of people, the viewers are invited to join them in their journey. Perhaps as these disparate groups come together over the mystery of these people, each individual will come to their own new awareness of what it means to be home.
Focussing on fragments and embedded cultural codes, different teams have investigated in partial reconstructions of culture. How did group structures evolve and stabilise, reaching beyond traditional family structures? Which means of communication are suggested by the unfamiliar type of cloth? What do oversized body extensions suggest? Are those people extinguished or do their successors still live close to the watercourse? Pragmatic research hypotheses have been fed in to the public space through unannounced outdoor tests.
During one month, the artist collective adapter and scientists of the nexus institute for cooperational management and interdisciplinary research have investigated the possibilities of cooperation and compatibility between scientists and artists from diverse cultural backgrounds (Germany, France, Canada). Point of reference for the cooperation is the theme homelands, observed from different perspectives, ranging between personal and global perceptions. The various disciplinary theoretic and practical paradigms have been integrated simultaneously. Through a process of amalgamation, traditional role allocations across the disciplines are sought to be opened, counteracting communicational gaps and processes of alienation. With finding a new innovative form, social and public questions are addressed.
You are cordially invited to the presentation of the first corporative research results on October 28, 2007 starting at 4pm. The installation at the GfKFB venue will open up new possibilities for the spectator to question the subjective notion of homelands.
