Described by Camille Pissarro as "the most beautiful painter's drawings in existence," Georges Seurat's mysterious and luminous works on paper played a crucial role in his short, vibrant career. This exhibition—the first major show in almost twenty-five years to focus exclusively on Seurat's drawings—will survey the artist's entire oeuvre, beginning with his academic training, focusing in depth on the first half of the 1880s when he worked extensively on paper, and, finally, examining studies made for his monumental canvases.
Comprised of approximately one hundred twenty works, primarily of the artist's incomparable conté drawings, along with a small selection of oil sketches and paintings, the exhibition will explore Seurat's methods and materials, the way he bridges the seemingly opposite goals of description and evocation; his subject matter, from Parisian types and popular entertainment to suburban landscapes; his scientific investigations, including his experiments with color theory; and his role in the emergence of Neo-Impressionism. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.
The exhibition is made possible by The Starr Foundation.
The exhibition is supported in part by the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust.
Additional funding is provided by Susan. G. Jacoby and The Norman and Rosita Winston Foundation.
