Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire has invited Edith Doove as a guest curator which has resulted in multi/plier. Multi/plier is according to her a layered word that can be read in two languages: as the French verb « multiplier », but also as the English noun « (a) multiplier ». In both cases it is an “active” word that expresses multiplication. In French it also points to “folding” or the “fold”.

The exhibition has several important points of departure. For one the artists in « multi/plier » are mostly young Belgian or in Belgium residing artists. With some of them Doove worked before, with others she already wanted to work for a long time. Two artists were chosen from the galleries’ list.
In their work this group of artists is not only interested in multidisciplinarity and/or layeredness or modes of change, but they are also interested in the collective and collaboration.

This cross-over and experimental mentality lays also at the base of ed.projects, the art agency in which Doove brings together her work as an independent curator, art critic and manager. In several projects that she made so far this aspect, that is more and more important in today’s (art) world, comes afore.
[See www.edprojects.be, www.dedonderdagen.be, www.superhasselt.be].
Other specific points of departure for this exhibition are therefore dialogue, mutual collaboration, negotiation and thus designing the project together in a joint effort of the artists, the guest-curator, the gallerist and her assistant.

A project in a gallery has its specific demands, but all involved try to push these to their limits. In this case we enter the dialogue with a completely different way of working than is usual in a gallery. Important questions that have to be asked are therefore: what exactly is the process behind the show, why do we make an exhibition like this in a gallery? All in view of what has happened historically already, but what seems again important today and answering to the generous invitation by the gallery in the first place.

We try to make a process-based exhibition with three important meeting points: the opening day, a day of conferences and finally the finissage. These moments can be seen as 1) the proposition, 2) the reflection and 3) the conclusion. The title « multi/plier » points to the dynamic of movement, of a coming and going, the multiplication of positions and meanings. The fold also symbolises a simultaneous opening up, closing and hiding (of meanings, insights), a public and a more private space.

And as writes Laurence Bouquiaux:
Le pli pour penser le continu, le pli pour penser le virtuel. Le pli, aussi, parce qu’il peut se replier et se déplier à l’infini, et qu’il permet dès lors de penser l’absence d’une origine radicale comme celle d’un terme ultime.*

Multi/plier is intended as a travelling show that wants to visit as many different contexts as possible. It is therefore an ongoing research into what a changing group exhibition can be and mean in today’s art world.
The results of this research will finally be published in an all-covering catalogue. We are at the moment looking for partners that want to invite the project.
