Alan Brooks

Mobile Home, London

Mobile Home is pleased to present a rare solo exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Alan Brooks. Working with the smallest of brushes, and aided by highly magnified jewellers glasses, Brooks reproduces in minute detail the instantaneous doodles we make whilst speaking on the phone or lost in thought.

The original scribbles from which the paintings develop are made on the ubiquitous Post-It note. Each drawing is xeroxed to scale, and the marks and dust left by the copying process are integrated into the final painting or drawing - every mark faithfully reproduced and given the same attention.

Each work takes 4-6 months to complete. He works eight hours a day, five days a week. Scribbles, which take seconds to produce, laboriously reproduced by hand in a time consuming, and seemingly pointless manner. This is his work. The results are beautiful, unassuming, tragic little paintings which allude to the intensity of the working regime.

Alan Brooks was a prize-winner in the John Moores 21 exhibition 1999. He was selected for the NatWest Painting Prize 1999 and 1998, EAST International 1999, The Jerwood Painting Prize 1998. Recent exhibitions include Percy Miller Gallery, London, Galerie Albrecht, Munich, Marlene Eleini, London, Newlyn Art Gallery, Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, Whitechapel Open. His work is in many public and private collections in the UK and abroad including British Airways, British Museum, Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery, Druckwerkstatt Bithania, Berlin, Germany, Reading University Permanent Collection.
