Mechanical Organs. The exhibition features a selection of objects from the Snyders' collection of over sixty barrel, street, cob and paper roll organs, dating between the eighteenth century and the early twentieth century.
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will echo with delightful mechanical music this fall and winter during an exhibition of mechanical organs lent by local collectors Russell and Rosie Snyder. The exhibition features a selection of objects from the Snyders' collection of over sixty barrel, street, cob and paper roll organs. Before the invention of recorded sound, people entertained themselves with music created by this amazing array of music machines.
The mechanical organs are hand-cranked or pumped and use pipes, bellows, reeds, drums and bells to make charming mechanical music. The machines interpret melodies from paper rolls, metal disks, or metal cobs either punched with holes or bristling with wires that engaged the music mechanisms. The organs, dating between the eighteenth century and the early twentieth century, are varied and fascinating machines; some are even decorated with stenciling or painting. The machines in the Snyders' collection include organs played by traveling preachers and by street organ grinders, as well as those played in private homes.
During the Opening Reception, on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., Mr. Snyder will play some of the mechanical organs. Mr. Snyder will graciously play some of the organs again on Sunday, January 6, 2008 and Sunday, February 10, 2008 between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.
