that photo l.a. 2008, the 17th Annual International Los Angeles Photographic
Art Exposition and the largest exhibition of its kind in the United States,
will take place January 10-13, 2008. artfairs inc. also announces that this
highly anticipated event-popular among collectors and curators alike-is
moving to a larger location: the 35,000 square foot Barker Hangar at the
Santa Monica Airport.
Located at 3021 Airport Avenue in Santa Monica, Barker Hangar will
comfortably accommodate a crowd in excess of 10,000 people-a necessity as
photo l.a. has become one of the country's most popular art fairs and will
coincide with Golden Globes week in January 2008. The new event space will
allow for larger booths and an improved lighting system, producing a clean,
modern backdrop against which to display more photo-based art, including
digital and video art, than ever before.
Created by Stephen Cohen, producer of the highly acclaimed art fairs photo
Miami, ART LA, photo san francisco and photo new york, photo l.a. will
feature the finest photographic art on display and for sale, from the
earliest 19th Century photographic experiments to the most contemporary
photography and photo-based art. Seventy of the world's leading galleries
and private dealers representing International and U.S. artists will display
work at photo l.a. 2008. Participating Los Angeles exhibitors include Craig
Krull Gallery, Peter Fetterman Gallery, Paul Kopeikin Gallery, Stephen Cohen
Gallery, and Jan Kesner Gallery. Chicago and New York galleries
participating in the exhibition include Yancey Richardson Gallery, ClampArt,
Gitterman Gallery and Stephen Daiter Gallery. International galleries
Galeria Sicart of Spain and Gallery19/21 of France also will participate in
the fair.
"Los Angeles is home to many artists-a major creative center in terms of the
production of photography and photo-based art," says Stephen Cohen, producer
of photo l.a., owner of the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles, and
co-owner of the Cohen Amador Gallery in New York. "photo l.a. 2008 presents
an international array of galleries, artists, curators, collectors, critics
and art enthusiasts with an opportunity to enjoy the best photography that
our city and the world have to offer. It will be a major cultural event in
the Los Angeles fine art landscape."
Highlights of the exhibition will include works by world-renowned
contemporary artists including Masao Yamamoto, Chris Jordan, James Fee,
Hellen van Meene, William Eggleston, David Hilliard, and Luis Gonzalez
Palma. Works by photography luminaries Eugene Atget, Brassai, Dorothea
Lang, Julius Shulman, Aaron Siskind, Walker Evans, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus,
Weegee, Josef Sudek, Edward Weston, Edmund Teske, Henry Callahan and Ansel
Adams also will be on display
At the opening night reception scheduled for Thursday, January 10 from 6:00
to 9:00 p.m., artfairs, inc. and photo l.a. 2008 will welcome to Los Angeles
the new department head and Curator of Photography at LACMA, Charlotte
Cotton. The evening's festivities also will present the perfect occasion to
honor renowned architectural photographer Julius Shulman who will be
presented with photo l.a.'s inaugural lifetime achievement award in
association with The Center-a nonprofit organization that honors, supports
and provides opportunity for gifted and committed photographers. Proceeds
from the opening night reception will benefit the Photography Department of
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a lecture and seminar series will take
place from January 12-13 with guest lecturers including Julius Shulman and
Charlotte Cotton.
The exhibition will be open to the public Friday, January 11 and Saturday,
January 12 from 11:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, January 13 from 11:00 to
6:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 for a one-day pass and $30 for a three-day pass.
The Conversations with Artists series of lectures are co-sponsored with
LACMA and are free to the public. The Conversation with Julius Shulman will
cost $10, as well a Sunday morning seminar on Book Collecting. Onsite
collecting seminars are $80 (includes a three day pass and catalog).
Student discounts for lectures and the fair are available with valid I.D.
Tickets to the opening benefit reception on Thursday, January 10, 2008 are
