Sonhei que tinha sonhado. Influenced by break-dance and hip hop music these artists started out in graffiti art, painting the streets of their hometown Sao Paolo.
Pilar Parra & Romero Gallery is pleased to present "SONHEI QUE TINHA SONHADO" the
first exhibition by Brazilian artists Os Gemeos (Portuguese for the twins)
Otavio and Augusto Pandolfo have made their way trough different European countries
achieving great success with their creative work. They started out in graffiti art,
painting the streets of their hometown Sao Paolo and now museums and galleries
around the world have representations of their art.
Their roots and cultural heritage are present in every expression from traditions to
myths, family stories and regular people are their central themes, they try to
expose scenes from every day life fusing it with the favelas landscapes showing an
emotional side of the Brazilian society, where everybody shows a smile regardless of
their context.
They keep certain coherence in their visual aesthetics even when using different
media such as canvas, paper or installations: the use of yellow and red along with
other bright colours, rich visual language were big yellow faces with un-expressive
eyes are a predominant feature that is present in everyone of their characters
without much change from one to another. All this portrayed with unique style is
presented in this exhibition where some pieces were produced and exhibited in the
Museum Het Domein in Sittard, Holland.
Little beings singing at the command of our hands, household objects (doors,
windows, kitchen utensils) are all incorporated in impressive sculptures and
installations stating a social opinion about what they have seen and lived
throughout their life.
Influenced by break-dance and hip hop music this artists came across the Pichacao
(brazilian graffiti) now it is them who affect and influence their country’s society
by delivering their own definition of Brazil using their visual style and language.
They are now considered prophets in the graffiti Meca and there where many who
shared their time with Os Gemeos making social statements in Brazil.
Otavio and Augusto (1974) have recently showed their work in Fortes Vilaça “O peixe
que comia estrelas candentes” in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Deitch Projects “Cavaleiro
Marginal” in New York. Museum Het Domein “The flowers in this garden were planted
by my grandparents” in Sittard, Holland. Beautiful Losers, Baltic Centre for
Contemporary Art, Spank the Monkey in the UK among others.
