comunicato stampa

Zhù Yì, from Mandarin, translates literally as ‘attention’, a meaning we focus on here in our attempt to find out what young Chinese artists see in their cities, what they miss, what has shaped them, what concerns them, what their dreams are, etc.

Zhù Yì! Chinese Photography Today is an invitation to discover the new China through a selection of 109 works created between 1994 and 2006 by the 31 artists taking part in this exhibition. The selected artists consider the different uses of history and the reality of globalisation today.

After the strict control of the Cultural Revolution, Chinese art started to revive during the 1980s and flourished in the mid-1990s. With this new generation, it has evolved further and now looks at the past as an exotic object, linking the possible danger and excitement of global culture with a hefty dose of ironic and laconic fervour.

Fascinated by everyday life and the new lines being drawn in the cities of the future, and facing an increasing danger of terrorist attacks and atomic weapons, Chinese artists live with another major concern: the growing feeling of unease generated by the rampant consumer fever fanned by this process.

Sometimes their work echoes a touch of melancholy rooted in a certain romantic notion of a mythical past; other times it transmits the optimism of young people who are well aware that they are entering a new, apparently prosperous, era. In this exhibition, these artists reflect the complexity of cultural influences and the way these can be projected, adding a touch of beauty and passion to their work.

The artists selected for this exhibition coincide in their choice of subject matter or repeat ideas using styles that take on the character of each individual artist. All these artists have deeply-felt ties with Chinese society and they all reflect different kinds of concerns in each of their photographs. In their different styles they reflect what is happening right now in China, a country of which we still have such a distorted and incomplete vision.
