Colocation #5. For this show the artist continues his series of drawings on paper The Beards: embellishing the figures in press images with Chechen-style beards, he signals a state of confusion and assimilation of a repressed Other.
The Beards
A Russian national born in Grozny in 1969, Alexei Kallima fled to Moscow at the beginning of the first Chechnyan war (1991–94). Overtly asserting his status as a Chechnyan artist, he made his reputation with drawings and walldrawings that bring enormous technical skill to bear on cruelly bucolic scenes of Chechnyan combatants smoking Marlboros and soldiers sleeping or scaling architectural constructions.
For La Box Kallima is continuing his series of drawings on paper The Beards (2007–08): embellishing the figures in press images with Chechen-style beards, he signals a simultaneous state of confusion and assimilation of a repressed Other.
