The Node: Body of Ciphers. Jones's biomorphic abstractions - shiny gloss paint on heavy-weight aluminium boards, partly covered in acrylic, accentuated by detailed ink drawings - are a constant work in progress. They constitute a whole, a functionally linked body.
Upstairs berlin is pleased to announce the gallery’s second solo exhibition of new works by London-based artist David Jones (born 1980 in London). Jones’s biomorphic abstractions – shiny gloss paint on heavy-weight aluminium boards, partly covered in acrylic, accentuated by detailed ink drawings – are a constant work in progress. They constitute a whole, a functionally linked body. All of David Jones‘s paintings are entitled Implosive Neuro Polymorphism/Conjoined Arena/Section...: they can be distinguished by a serial numeral (cipher) at the end acting as an indicator for the further physical and psychological development of the cycle. The term node alludes to the amount of contrasting elements which are intersected in such a way that they seem to implode in each painting.
Affected by various visual languages from biology, chemistry and medicine, David Jones’s earlier works indicated figurative elements only to revert to abstraction at once. His new paintings open up perspectives hinting at first life forms after the appearance of the solar system. Here one perceives primordial and archaic evolutions reminiscent of crosses between cartoon characters, micro-organisms and insects. 27-year-old David Jones’s new works suggest that his compositional impetus has become more concentrated and that his ability to create depth of space has increased. The mystery of his paintings remains unchanged, generating their own, profound (life-)forms.
Besides his participation in a group exhibition at Galería OMR in Mexico City, in 2007 David Jones spent several months in Germany as an artist-in-residence at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and GlogauAIR in Berlin. Works by Jones are part of important private and public collections such as the Jose Cuervo Collection in Mexico, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in Los Angeles and the West Collection in Philadelphia.
