The Young Art Fair. The Liste's concept of introducing galleries in general no more than 5 years old and artists under 40 has been at the heart of its being one of the most important fairs for young art and still being considered one of the art world's most important discoverer fair. Rich program of guests, special shows and events. 64 galleries from 22 countries will be participating in the 13th edition of the fair and will be presenting themselves to international collectors, art experts, and curators as well as to art lovers from the Basel area and the world at large.
Every year since its opening in 1996, the LISTE - the Young Art Fair in Basel has presented new and important galleries and highly contemporary young art. The LISTE's concept of introducing galleries in general no more than 5 years old and artists under 40 has been at the heart of its being one of the most important fairs for young art and still being considered one of the art world’s most important discoverer fair.
On Monday, June 2, 2008, the LISTE 08 -- The Young Art Fair will, as in
past years, mark the beginning of Basel's art week with its opening
reception. 64 galleries from 22 countries will be participating in the
13th edition of the fair and will be presenting themselves to
international collectors, art experts, and curators as well as to art
lovers from the Basel area and the world at large.
The fair will once again live up to its reputation as the most important
discoverer fair for young art: Approximately one-half of the artists
presented will be making their Basel debut. For many of these artists,
the LISTE represents their very first experience on the international
art stage. In addition, about one-fourth of the galleries will be taking
part in the LISTE for the first time. This is in keeping with one of the
LISTE's guiding principles: to promote young galleries at an early stage
in their existence and young artists under 40.
The opening reception for the LISTE is, as in prior years, open to the
public and will take place on Monday, June 2, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00
p.m. At the same time, a performance by cinemari, a troupe composed of
two Brasilian artists Cinthia Marcelle and Marilá Dardot. The
performance will strike the opening chord of the program, which will
feature performances daily at 6:00 p.m.
Special Guests at the LISTE 08
This year, we are once again organizing special shows and events. Each
year we provide a venue for a Swiss institution going to special lengths
in the service of young art to present itself to the public. This year
it is the Kunsthaus Baselland. As in other years, the center for
electronic media [plug.in] from Basel and dock: contemporary art from
Basel in the Kaskadenkondensator, will make an appearance.
*The Kunsthaus Baselland *is an institution located between urban and
industrial spaces which capitalizes on the nature of its site in the
service of experimental and innovative art projects. The Kunsthaus
Baselland presents group exhibitions that grapple with social problems
and contemporary artistic questions as well as solo exhibitions of
talented young artists. At the LISTE, the Kunsthaus Baselland will be
showing works by Shaun Gladwell (Australia), Martin Walde (Austria),
Stefan Burger (Germany), and Gavin Turk (Great Britain), four artists
with whom the institution works closely and who will respond in their
work specifically to the exhibition space at the fair.
For several years now,* [plug.in] *has been focusing on the electronic
media, which from year to year become ever more important to our daily
lives, as well as societal and artistic questions that arise at the
interface between daily life and media technologies.
At the LISTE, [plug.in] will be presenting exonemo (Japan). The two
artists Kensuke Sembo and Yae Akaiwa have been working together since
1996 and have created a series of daring, funny, and profound works
documenting the increasing influence of electronic media on our society.
The two artists will be presenting their work DanmatsuMouse at the
LISTE: When a computer mouse is destroyed, it leaves behind a kind of
final statement in the form of both material and data, all of which is
being simultaneously documented by a video camera and a computer
program. In this way, the act of destruction can be played back and thus
simulated on the computer.*
*dock: contemporary art from Basel* will be presented in the
Kaskadenkondensator, an exhibition space promoting local art. The artist
archive dock: contains documentation of about 250 artists from Basel and
the surrounding area and can provide the public a feel for artistic
pursuit and the local art scene. Dock: sees itself as a platform
dedicated to facilitating communication not only between artists,
curators, but also with a broader audience.
