New Paintings. The imagery that lies within Jeff Carpenter’s paintings is revealed like forms taking shape as our eyes adjust to darkness. His multi-layered works allude to the feelings embedded in the human experience of memory and time - emphasizing, yet also celebrating, the mysteries inherent in the trajectory of remembrance. He presents to us a visual experience where associations and feelings shape our consciousness as much as our minds’ "photographs".
The imagery that lies within Jeff Carpenter’s paintings is revealed like forms taking shape as our eyes adjust to darkness. His
multi-layered works allude to the feelings embedded in the human experience of memory and time - emphasizing, yet also
celebrating, the mysteries inherent in the trajectory of remembrance. He presents to us a visual experience where associations
and feelings shape our consciousness as much as our minds’ "photographs". His process is both evident and elusive, his
layering serves to present a visual representation of a thought as a conceptual subtext, which we assimilate based on our own
reality. As the artist states:
"I would like to find a place in between abstraction and representational image-making, where the archetypal form that triggers
your sense of place, of light, and knowingness, is filtered through an abstract of the sensation of being there."
Carpenter’s current body of work, consisting primarily of cloud imagery, deals with notions of travel and motion- specifically the
transient nature of the sky and the experience of flying, as well as interpersonal travel. The clouds seem to sweep over your
body as you stand in front of them, allowing the viewer a wide range of experiences. Included in the works is also a tribute to
the victims of September 11th, which includes text directly related to the event.
