Julian Goethe

Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich

For the 2008 Munich Opera Festival, the National Theater and Pinakothek der Moderne present one project by the artist. In the National Theater's stately rooms Goethe's shiny black figures develop their own theatricality by modelling the light from the crystal chandeliers to cast distorted shadows. By contrast, an austere wall sculpture in the Rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne marks the boundary to an imaginary room, which may in itself be understood as a drama.

comunicato stampa

For the 2008 Munich Opera Festival, the National Theater and Pinakothek der Moderne are joining in a collaboration on five concerts and on one project by the artist Julian Göthe (*1966). In the National Theater's stately rooms Göthe’s shiny black figures develop their own theatricality by modelling the light from the crystal chandeliers to cast distorted shadows. By contrast, an austere wall sculpture in the Rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne marks the boundary to an imaginary room, which may in itself be understood as a drama.

Göthe’s sculptures relate to Modernism – yet not to its generally recognised canon of art forms. Instead, they sympathise with the less acknowledged forms of expression, which are sometimes held in low esteem: with window dressing, product design and film set design, or festive decoration. Göthe is also interested in highly idiosyncratic post-war interpretations of Modernism such as are to be found in the architectural details of the Munich Opera house. Even now, the non-canonist aspects of modernity continue to be associated with the vulgar, shrill or decadent, with lack of originality deemed to be serving exclusively commercial purposes. Precisely these forms of expression, however, may reflect particular moods.

These eccentric aesthetics are the link between Göthe's sculptures and Ferruccio Busoni’s opera »Doktor Faust«, the central focus of this year’s festival. The unwieldy work, which remains a fragment, rejects the conventionality and comprehensible narrative of the famous »Faust« material. It includes, among other elements, an invisible choir located backstage, which means the audience hears »Voices from the Off «, as if listening in to itself.

Without doubt Ferruccio Busoni is one of the most dazzling and versatile artists in music history. His pupil Kurt Weill called him not without reason a »Renaissance man«, comparable to the universal genius Leonardo da Vinci. A reading to be held with musical accompaniment in the Allerheiligen Hofkirche (All Saints Court Church) on 1st July offers an opportunity to gain an idea of Busoni's personality and thoughts. Besides chamber music from various stages of the composer’s career, there will be readings of texts by him, about him, and excerpts from the »favourite books« of Busoni who was an enthusiastic reader of fantasy literature. One year after the premiere of Busoni’s »Doktor Faust«, F. W. Murnau completed the film »Faust – Eine deutsche Volkssage« (»Faust –A German Folk Legend«). He, too, distanced himself from the all-dominant Goethe and turned instead to the book of folklore tales of 1589 as his point of reference. Murnau's version is considered to be one of the most important silent films of German Expressionism. It will be shown on 24th June at the Allerheiligen Hofkirche. The live music accompanying the film has been composed by Aljoscha Zimmermann.
