Dieter Roth's Early Artistic Films. This exhibition is devoted to early experimental films realised by the artist in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of Roth's films are documentations of his performances or readings or, alternatively, could be considered to function as video installations: on the contrary other works can be classified as artistic film.
This exhibition is devoted to early experimental films realised by the artist in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of Roth's films are documentations of his performances or readings or, alternatively, could be considered to function as video installations: on the contrary, works such as “pop 1 / dock 1 + 2 / letter / dot, 1956/61” (1976) can be classified as artistic film.
Accordingly, these will be presented in proximity to his artist's books, prints, stamped pieces, and compositions using various other materials realised during the 1950s into the 1970s. The viewer will be able to ponder whether these leitmotifs, methods and interests mark important developments in Roth's artistic development.
One can also follow the artistic and general aesthetic principles in the films echoed in his work in other media which can be clearly experienced by visitors to the exhibition. Indeed, this exhibition, which also marks the 10th anniversary of this important Hanover-based artist's death, offers visitors an opportunity to experience the unusual aesthetic of his films; the way he used light and movement, his visual use of word-play as well as the material nature of the medium and how this resulted in extraordinary image sequences.
