IUAV at MANIFESTA7 è un progetto che nasce nell’ambito di una collaborazione tra IUAV, il primo ateneo in Italia dedicato nella sua totalità alle arti visive e all’architettura e Manifesta, la biennale internazionale di arte emergente, quest’anno, arrivata alla sua settima edizione, ospitata dalla Regione Trentino- Alto Adige/ Sudtirol dal 19 luglio al 2 novembre 2008.
Concepito dalla curatrice Cornelia Lauf, Visiting Professor dello IUAV, presso la Facoltà di Arti e Design, IUAV at MANIFESTA7 rappresenta un’importante vetrina per le tendenze sperimentali nella pratica dell’arte sociale a livello di base. Riunendo tre collettivi artistici, nati nell’ambito del Laboratorio di Allestimento di Cornelia Lauf, i progetti si propongono di presentare una doppia dimensione etica ed estetica, ponendo in luce il ruolo chiave dello IUAV per le future generazioni di artisti. Il progetto fa seguito alla mostra IUAV at MAXXI, recentemente presentata presso il MAXXI, polo museale di arte contemporanea di Roma e curata da Angela Vettese e Lauf. Angela Vettese è fondatrice, con Marco De Michelis, della Facoltà delle Arti presso lo IUAV di Venezia , dove dal 2001 dirige il CLASAV (Corso di Laurea Specialistica in Arte Visiva).

IAUV at MANIFESTA7 propone, nella città di Rovereto, tre progetti relativi al tema dell’uso e consumo consapevole delle risorse naturali e artificiali: Airswap, Aspra.mente, Publink. I progetti sono selezionati dalla curatrice per adattarsi alla linea di Manifesta7, e alle realtà politiche, culturali ed economiche presenti sul territorio secondo un comune spirito etico e utopistico. Ogni collaborazione coinvolge la rete locale e regionale e implica una forte dimensione estetica volta a sottolineare principalmente il ri-uso di materiali considerati usa e getta, l’uso responsabile del patrimonio ambientale inteso, come risorsa naturale e la protezione della biodiversità. L’intero progetto è coordinato dall’assistente curatrice, Ilaria Gianni, M.A., Goldsmiths College of London.

Il progetto Airswap nasce nel 2006 da un’idea di Arianna Callegaro, allo scopo di investigare il rapporto tra arte e territorio, innescando un processo di arte partecipativa. Dal 2008 Airswap si compone di un team che nasce dall’esigenza di promuovere al meglio il progetto presso le istituzioni nazionali ed internazionali, servendosi dell’esperienze specifiche dei membri che lo compongono: Luca Mazza, Silke De Vivo e Francesca Togni.
In un contesto in cui moda e comunicazione si concentrano sul rapporto di instabilità tra costrizione sociale e libertà individuale, Airswap focalizza la sua indagine sui processi di soggettivazione nell’ambito del fashion system.
Sulla scia di queste riflessioni è maturata l'idea che l'azione di postproduzione delle realtà creative locali, crei nuove forme di relazione e di fruibilità della merce. Per Manifesta7 Airswap propone l’azione in un formato agile, costituendo le premesse di contatto con il territorio ospitante e l’aspetto ciclico della sua dinamica. L’installazione consiste in un corner in legno, formato da sei pannelli modulari rivestiti di un patchwork di carte da parati trattate e personalizzate, che fungerà da espositore del lavoro di postproduzione effettuato site specific per Manifesta7.

Il gruppo Aspra.mente, composto da Eva Cenghiaro, Giulia Gabrielli, Gabriella Guida, Alessandra Saviotti nasce nell’ottobre 2006 intorno all’idea del “work in progress” inteso come ideazione di progetti concernenti l’arte e qualsiasi altra forma di espressione; progetti che si sviluppano nel tempo attraverso l’apporto fondamentale del pubblico fino a creare una sorta di responsabilizzazione collettiva dell’atto artistico. Aspra.mente presenta il progetto Vaccinium: il collettivo propone un percorso che riavvicini all’identità culturale della regione così legata al rapporto con la natura. Il Trentino è generalmente conosciuto per la produzione di frutta ed in particolare di mele, la cui diffusione su larga scala ha contribuito a creare un’immagine stereotipata della zona, che non lascia spazio all’emergere di altri prodotti; in un’ottica di recupero della tradizione locale la scelta è caduta sul mirtillo per le sue caratteristiche specifiche: cresce nel bosco e rievoca ambienti che ricordano le favole tradizionali. Il concept dell’installazione si articola su due binari paralleli che mettono in rapporto tradizione e tecnologia, sia in relazione all’agricoltura e ai moderni strumenti di produzione e commercializzazione, sia in relazione alla pratica artistica. Il progetto si propone di aprire una prospettiva critica sulla medicina tradizionale e alternativa. Il mirtillo sarà proposto come medicina, sotto forma di succo, ma non per il suo effetto terapeutico specifico. Confezionato come una medicina tradizionale sarà accompagnato da un “foglietto illustrativo” che indicherà tutte le informazioni sulla sua produzione, oltre che sui modi più o meno topici di consumo.

Un normale cassonetto diventa un armadio pubblico in Rifiuto Con Affetto del gruppo Publink. Il gruppo, formato da Roberta Bruzzechesse, Maddalena Vantaggi e Maria Zanchi, nasce dal comune interesse per l’arte pubblica intesa come realizzazione di idee che interagiscono con il tessuto urbano e sociale, secondo una strategia che prevede l’attivazione di progetti site-specific basati sul diretto coinvolgimento del pubblico e delle istituzioni che operano sul territorio.
Il cassonetto RCA è un intervento di public art che attingendo all’idea di vetrina vuole creare una nuova relazione tra l’interno e l’esterno del cassonetto: l’azione del “buttar via” e quella del “rovistare” si trasformano in un “lascia e prendi”.Un luogo destinato al solo gesto del rifiutare si fa punto di scambio e di incontro tra le persone, attivando un’attenzione critica nell’abitudine del “buttar via”. Rifiuto Con Affetto opera la rilettura di un gesto socialmente condiviso, quello del rifiutare, rielaborandone il valore attraverso un intervento nello spazio pubblico, così trasformato in fertile terreno di riflessione.

Cornelia Lauf è curatrice indipendente e storico d’arte. Vive tra Roma e New York. Dottorato (Columbia University) e esperta di libri d’artista. Scrive regolarmente su Art in America e altre pubblicazioni. Lauf ha lavorato con istituzioni di tipologia diverse: dal Guggenheim Museum, Getty Research Institute, Harvard University, a Ujazdowski Castle, Varsavia, Musée d’Art Moderne, Parigi, Galleria Civica di Modena, e Santa Maria della Scala, Siena. E’ editor di Three Star Books, Parigi.

Ilaria Gianni è curatrice indipendente e critica d’arte e vive tra Londra e Roma. Diplomatesi con un MFA in Curating al Goldsmiths College, University of London, ha curato varie mostre personali e collettive in spazi quali: la Fondazione Adriano Olivetti, Roma; Galleria Maze, Torino; Galleria Monitor, Roma. La sua attenzione si focalizza sulle ultime generazioni di artisti. Scrive regolarmente su varie testate nazionali e internazionali di riviste specializzate in arte contemporanea.

La presente esposizione, come i recenti progetti presentati dallo IUAV al MAXXI hanno ricevuto il generoso sostegno dello IUAV e della Fondazione di Venezia che finalizza il suo impegno alla valorizzazione e conservazione dei beni e delle attività culturali e alla promozione del territorio.

Social Art Practices

Three Collectives from IUAV: Airswap, Aspra.mente, Publink

IUAV at MANIFESTA7 is a project that has been activated through a collaboration between the IUAV, the first university in Italy dedicated in its whole to visual arts and architecture, and Manifesta, the international biennial of emerging art, now at its seventh edition, this year hosted by the Region of Trentino- Alto Adige/ Sudtirol from July 19 to November 2, 2008.
Conceived by the curator Cornelia Lauf, Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Design of the IUAV, IUAV at MANIFESTA7 represents an important space for the experimental tendencies of basic social art practice. Reuniting three artistic collectives, that took form in Cornelia Lauf's "Display Workshop", the projects aims to present both an ethical and aesthetic dimension of social art practices, illustrating the key role of the IUAV for the future generations of artists.

The project can be considered a continuation of the show IUAV at MAXXI, recently curated by Angela Vettese and Lauf at the MAXXI, the main Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. Angela Vettese is founder, with Marco De Michelis, of the Faculty of Arts at the IUAV of Venice, where she is director of the CLASAV (Specialized Degree in visual Art) since 2001.

IAUV at MANIFESTA7, hosted in the town of Rovereto, proposes three relevant projects on the idea of usage and conscientious consumption of natural and artificial resources by the collectives Airswap, Aspra.mente, Publink. The projects have been chosen by the curator in relation to the critical line taken by Manifesta7, and to the political, cultural and economical reality present on the territory, taking in consideration a common ethical and utopian spirit. Every collaboration involves the local and regional network and involves a strong aesthetic dimension that aims to mainly underline the re-use of disposable material, show the responsible use of the environment considered as a natural resource, and support biodiversity. The whole project is coordinated by the assistant curator, Ilaria Gianni, a recent graduate in Curating at Goldsmiths College, London.

The project Airswap began in 2006, from an idea of Arianna Callegaro, with the will to investigate the relation between art and territory, through the idea of relational art practice. Since 2008 Airswap has enriched itself with a team that intends to better promote the project on a national and international level with components specialized in different subjects: Luca Mazza, Silke De Vivo and Francesca Togni. In a context in which fashion and communication concentrate on the relation of instability between social constraint and individual freedom, Airswap focuses its inquiry on the processes of subjectivity in the domain of the fashion system. From these thoughts, the idea that the act of postproduction in local creative realities has the strength to create forms of relationship and of usability of products, began taking shape. For Manifesta7, Airswap proposes the action in an agile form, giving the possibility to give birth to a relationship with the hosting territory, with the cyclic aspect of its dynamics. The installation consists of a wooden corner formed of six modular panels coated with a patchwork of designed wallpaper that will function as a showcase of the postproduction work specifically made for Manifesta7.

Aspra.mente, composed by Eva Cenghiaro, Giulia Gabrielli, Gabriella Guida, Alessandra Saviotti, began collaborating in October 2006 around the idea of "work in progress" of projects concerning art and any other form of expression. They work on projects that develop in time, through the essential role of the audience, aiming to create a collective sense of responsibility of the artistic action. Aspra.mente presents the project Vaccinium. The collective proposes a work that aims to relate to the cultural identity of the Region through its natural heritage. Trentino is well known for the production of fruit and particularly of apples, produced all through the Region. This has determined the creation of a stereotyped image of Trentino, one that does not leave space for other products to emerge. Aspra.mente decided to operate a recovery of the local tradition and concentrated its attention on the blueberry for its specific features: it grows in the forest and recalls environments that remember traditional story tales. The concept around the installation is related, at the same time, to the idea of tradition and technology. The project aims to deal with the idea of agriculture and modern tools of production and commercialization in relation to artistic practice. Vaccinium intends to open a critical perspective on the idea of traditional and alternative medicine. The blueberry will be proposed as a medicine, in the form of juice, but not for its specific therapeutic effect. It will be packaged as a traditional medicine, and it will be accompanied by an "illustrative leaflet" that will indicate all the information on its production, and on its topical uses.

A normal box becomes a public closet in Rifiuto con Affetto (Refusal With Affection) of the group Publink. The group, formed by Roberta Bruzzechesse, Maddalena Vantaggi and Maria Zanchi, takes its first steps from a common interest towards public art understood as a practice that privileges the interaction between ideas and the urban and social texture. The group mainly focuses on site-specific projects based on the direct involvement of the institutions and the audience living in a precise territory. The RCA box is an intervention of public art that draws on the idea of window, wiling to create new relationships between interior and exterior: the actions of "throwing away" and of "searching for" transform themselves in a "leave and take". A space that usually functions as a place of abandonment, of refusal becomes a strategic point of encounter and exchange between people, activating a critical attention towards the act of "throwing out". Rifiuto con Affetto operates the re-interpretation of the common gesture of throwing out, re-elaborating its value through an intervention in the public space, transformed in a fertile terrain of research.

Cornelia Lauf is an art historian, writer and curator who is specialized in contemporary art and design. An authority on artist's books, Lauf is editor of Three Star Books, Paris, with publications by Tobias Rehberger, Maurizio Cattelan, Ken Lum, and Heimo Zobernig. Zobernig is the subject of a current exhibition curated by Lauf at the Galleria Civica di Modena, accompanied by three artist's books.
Lauf has a doctorate from Columbia University and is author and co-author of publications, including The Leonardo Codices of Joseph Beuys, published by Dia Center for the Arts, the Guggenheim Museum Handbook, and monographs on Katharina Sieverding and Konstantin Grcic. She is a regular contributor to Art in America. In 1996, Lauf founded Camera Oscura, an internationally known alternative space in Italy devoted to the interface between art, craft, and agriculture. She teaches at the University IUAV of Venice, Italy.

Ilaria Gianni is an independent curator who lives between London and Rome. Gianni is completing an MFA in Curating at Goldmsiths College, University of London. She has curated group and solo shows at the Adriano Olivetti Foundation, Rome; Maze Gallery, Turin; SNUMOA, Seoul; Gallery Loop, Seoul. Her attention focuses on the younger generation of artist. She writes on a regular basis on national and international magazines specialized in contemporary art and has recently co-edited the publication A Fine Red Line - A Curatorial Miscellany, IM press, London.

IUAV at Manifesta7, as the recent project IUAV at MAXXI, has been generously supported by the IUAV and by the Fondazione di Venezia that directs its interests towards the valorization, preservation and promotion of the Venetian territory and its cultural heritage.
