La mostra mette a confronto la storia delle immagini in movimento, intese come film e video d'artista, con l'immagine fissa della fotografia. È un incontro tra due diverse concezioni del tempo: da un lato l'eterno presente dell'immagine filmica, che può vivere solo nel suo ripetuto svolgersi, e dall'altro il tempo passato, fermato nella fotografia, sempre già concluso nell'istante stesso in cui affiora sulla carta fotografica.

È un incontro tra due diverse dimensioni visive. Il cinema ha sempre mantenuto dalle sue origini di fine Ottocento un'aura diafana di proiezione magica. La fotografia ha invece portato con sé, sino all'avvento del digitale, un'implicita concretezza, significati di prova, evidenza e impronta di oggetti reali.

In un arco cronologico, suddiviso in due tranches, che va dal 1961 e arriva fino al 2008, la mostra presenta opere fatte per immagini in movimento ma al cui interno l'uso della fotografia è centrale, come elemento strutturale o contenutistico. Da La Jetèe di Chris Marker, film sull'attraversamento del tempo, composto per sole fotografie, alla video installazione Retrospection di Claerbout, dove tutto il movimento di macchina si risolve all'interno della superficie di un'unica vecchia fotografia.

The exhibition aims to compare the history of moving pictures, intended as film and video art, with still photographic images; an encounter between two distinct concepts of time: the eternal present of the filmic image, which can exist solely through its repeated projection, on one hand, and the time past, captured within the photograph, which is already over the moment it appears on photographic paper, on the other.
It is an encounter between two different visual contexts. Since its beginnings, at the end of the 19th Century, cinema has always conveyed a gauzy aura of magical projection. Conversely, until the advent of digital technology, photography has always suggested an implicit feeling of tangibility, of evidence, of proof of real objects.
Within a span of time, split into two segments, ranging from 1961 to 2008, the exhibition presents works made of moving pictures in which still images, however, represent key factors as a structural constituents or elements of content. From Chris Marker's La Jetèe, a time-travel film composed of still images, to Claerbout's video-installation Retrospection, in which the action captured by the movie camera takes place on the surface of a single old photograph.
